Prototype 2 launched for PS3 and Xbox 360 on the 24th of April 2012; sequel to 2009′s Prototype, we are introduced to the new character of Sargent James Heller, infected by Alex Mercer of the original Prototype who carries the original ‘Blacklight’ virus, (nicknamed ‘The Mercer Virus’) which transforms James to become one of the ‘Evolved’ like Alex. Prototype 2′s gameplay is much the same as its predecessor, but Radical Entertainment have added new features, such as a hunting skill, which allows James to send out a ‘pulse’ to find a particular person to consume, either from a short distance or over a wider area. Prototype 2′s game play is far smoother than the original, with James’s controls being handled with more precision over Alex’s rough and tumble style of parkour. James already has the ability to glide in the beginning, whereas you have to consume someone to gain the experience points for Alex’s glide ability in Prototype. As James levels up, or consumes people or beasts such as the Brawlers for abilities, he gains the use of a shield, claws, tendrils (snake-like ropes that can damage tanks or helicopters) a lethal-looking blade, hammer fists or the whipfist. All have their uses and can be helpful in the aid of battle. The backstory to James is that he believes that his wife and daughter were killed by the Mercer virus, so he swears to get revenge by not only finding out who killed them, but also taking down not only BlackWatch & Gentek but Alex Mercer as well. As you complete more and more missions, James finds out more about the past, but the future as well, with Alex having invented a new strain of the virus called ‘Whitelight’ which is supposedly meant to be a cure, but Alex has tampered with it by making it worse, so it’s James’s responsibility to sabotage and destroy all of the strains of the ‘Whitelight’ virus. Set two years after the original outbreak of the virus, New York has now been named ‘New York Zero’, with areas of Manhattan being labelled either a red, yellow or green zone. The green zone has the least ‘infected’ (i.e. zombies) but the most BlackWatch and Gentek intel, which makes it harder to sneak past or complete missions if you are being aimed at with rocket launchers every five seconds. The Yellow Zone has more infected, but less Blackwatch Intel; James starts in this area first, but you can travel around if you consume a BlackWatch soldier and gain access to one of the helicopters travelling via the various air-bridges. The Red Zone, in upper Manhattan, has the most infected where the disease is rife, and it is the home of Alex Mercer. With the help of Alex’s sister, Dana Mercer, he plans to confront Alex. James ends up discovering his daughter Maya is alive, and when all is said and done, he is reunited with her. Graphically, it looks stunning; in the FMV’s, it has a...

Released on October the 10th in 2008 (okay it’s a little late I know) Lego Batman: The Videogame saw it being released on just about every platform; Microsoft Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Wii & Xbox 360. I have played the Xbox version, so just like a super-hero, I will try my best to do it justice. Set in Gotham City, Batman & Robin (in Lego form) fight their way through the city, solving puzzles, or building lego brick objects, smashing objects to find hidden pieces, and collecting studs, which enables you to buy upgrades, unlockables, the various vehicles you can use in the game; from the water, to land and in the air; there’s the BatMobile, Robin’s bike, the BatBoat, Robin’s speedboat, and a new vehicle in the form of the BatWing plane. Batman and Robin also get extra suits, which do a variety of different things; from Batman’s heat suit which allows him to walk on hot objects without being burnt, to Robin’s magnet suit, which allows him to walk up walls to get to areas that Batman can’t reach. In this game, Batman faces every villain; from Clayface, The Mad Hatter, Man-Bat, Mr Freeze, Riddler, Bane, Killer Croc, Killer Moth, Scarecrow, Harvey Two-Face, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Harley Quinn & Batman’s arch-nemesis, The Joker. Three of the villains make plans to try and take over Gotham; The Riddler tried to the city savings in the Gotham Gold Reserves; Penguin plans to seize control of Gotham using remote-controlled penguin robots, and the Joker intends to blow up the cathedral and spread his deadly laughing gas across Gotham. Batman & Robin thwart them all and they end up back in Arkham Asylum. There is a chance in which you are able to play as the villains and you can do various missions where the villains face the police, as opposed to Batman & Robin . The gameplay is simple, but effective, and is fun solving the puzzles and building the Lego objects, and at the end of each level there’s a chance to fight each villain; they can be annoying as they tend to have endless goons shooting at you with machine guns; it’s better to get rid of them first and then deal with the villain. Most of the missions tend to play out in a similar setup, with Batman & Robin facing whichever villain and fighting them so much so that they can be arrested and sent to Arkham Asylum. The background music is alright; standard super hero action fare; not too loud so that you can’t concentrate on the game but not so quiet that it you can’t hear it and it’s not exciting. There is an even balance which doesn’t distract from the main game. Since it’s release, the developers Traveller’s Tales have announced they are making Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, which is meant to be a tie-in to the new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises being released...

It’s time for your humble writer to mount the moany pony™, because today marks the death of a very much loved feature of Xbox Live. Inside Xbox is dead. Today, Inside Xbox is dead across the boad with the announcement of Europe’s team meeting the same fate as the American team. Following the news last week that that Inside Xbox in the US was to cease production, the team in Europe has been investigating what makes most sense for them and the Xbox LIVE community as they continue to strive to deliver the latest gaming and entertainment news for users across the region. As such, they have decided to move away from the current first-party produced content model and transition to a third-party content model, which will provide timely and locally-relevant content to users across more of the EMEA markets. Whilst this means that the Inside Xbox brand will effectively be retired in Europe, the focus remains on continuing to provide the Xbox LIVE community with the latest and best in games and entertainment news and information. - [Major Nelson’s Blog] In my opinion, Inside Xbox was the most glaring thing setting Live apart from the content wasteland that is PSN. For the Europeans readers, Andy “SuperKaylo Farrantula” Farrant and Dan “Mr Pointyhead” Maher (Previously joined by Graeme “AceyBongos” Boyd and Jane Douglas) provided the entertaining, informative videotainment (not an actual word.) from within Microsoft. On the US side, Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Bridget O’Neill among others brought content to the fans across the pond. What this means is that the first party content such as The NeXus, SentUAMessage, Insider Moves and the Monday Musing are finished. It may not have helped things that with the Dashboard update which brought the Metro Interface to our Xbox, Inside Xbox was moved to a corner where you’d have to go and actually search for it, unlike the previous dashboard where it had it’s own space and it was easily accessible. What is also annoying is that recently Inside Xbox merged the Tuesday Tweetbate into a new video feature called “The Watch” which is now gone like the rest of the content. The community (including myself) have hit up @MajorNelson, his blog and Facebook expressing our disappointment that content by such passionate people has been cut, especially against the express wishes of the community who have been sending a clear signal to Microsoft since Inside Xbox US was stopped to not let this occur to the UK team. As paying consumers, we’re now left wondering just what we’re paying for, especially with the introduction of advertisements to our dashboards despite the fact we’re paying a premium price for convenience. Oh and online gaming. I know for sure the only thing I am paying for right now is online gaming as I can get BBC I-Player, 4OD, Crackle, Netflix, Lovefilm, etc elsewhere without having to drop £40+ a year on a subscription that I barely use on a daily basis. At least with Inside...

We Were Free! I Was Free! You Were Free! WE WERE FREE! Free from what, I hear you ask. We were free from the evil clutches of the terrorizing mistress known as “Trials”. We should all be familiar with the concept of Trials by now, unless you bypassed the first console instalment or just don’t have a 360. The game is deceptive via simplicity. It’s a man, his motorcycle and a series of courses that can either be rather simple or will inspire you to rip your hair from your head. As said, the concept is as simple as they can get, it’s you, a motorcycle and a track. The aim is to get from the start to the finish as fast as you can. I told you it sounded simple. It’s not. Along the way, there are ramps, jumps and various obstacles designed to force you off of the bike and bail out. These could be in the form of pipes, tyres, fences or even explosives. As the game starts out, these are pretty easy to dodge and get to the finish line in one piece, but soon the difficulty ramps up and that’s where the cruelty begins. To progress, you need to obtain various medals from completing tracks, a gold medal equates for three, silver resulting in two and bronze for one. Usually, you’ll simply grab a bronze for simply completing a track, silver for being faster or with minimum bails and gold being given away for meeting the desired time and not bailing out at all. In later courses, patience is the key unlike in some earlier courses where speed is the key. And boy, do you need a ton of patience for those later levels. It takes a talented development crew to keep us raging and coming back for more. There are really two development teams that I currently know of that have that ability, one is Red Lynx. The other are the geniuses (or evil masterminds) that are “Team Meat”, otherwise known as the bastards that created Super Meat Boy. It’s an abusive relationship in videogame form, and it’s a cycle of abuse that may never end, especially if you’re a perfectionist. The controls are very simple, throttle, brake, leaning controls and the ever present options to either restart the track from the beginning or just from the last checkpoint. Being the attempted perfectionist I am, I’m more acquainted with starting the track from scratch every time I screw up. Not quite the best course of action on the longer and more difficult circuits. For people who have gotten into Evolution from HD, you’ll find that not a great deal has changed fundamentally, because as they say “don’t fix what isn’t broken”. Red Lynx have kept the system that works and I personally thank them for that. Don’t get me wrong, though. This isn’t some DLC masquerading as a sequel. Multiplayer has upgraded, the track editor has upgraded and Red Lynx have made custom tracks...
